It is an amazing gift to have been created by the highest source in the universe. Especially with such physical and mechanical brilliance that is filled with spirituality and a collection of thoughts that assist you in your daily activities and decisions. Exercise the Opportunities of Leadership, It Can Be a Great Experience
There are many opportunities for a leader to acknowledge the needs of their team and the need of their employer. While many leaders are well intentioned in their efforts, they are following the managing exercises of those leaders that introduced leadership to them under circumstances that either no longer exists or are out of date with the changes of society and the employer’s needs.
Many leaders fall into the regretful trap that I call, “Arriving”. Arriving is a leaders acknowledgement of his or her new title and authority, but not their actual responsibilities. In many cases this may not be the leaders intention . It may actually be the only example that a leader has ever been shown by the leaders of their past, therefore the belief exists that the actions are an appropriate choice. It is important to remember that a leader can only lead to the extent of their own experiences and education.
Though remembering and understanding the past is needed in leadership. The past does not dictate present needs. Leadership has never been, nor ever will be a responsibility that depends upon what a leader once knew or used to do. It is a real time responsibility that requires a leaders skills to remain as fresh and sharp as the workplace tasks that present themselves on a daily basis. While your employer may offer education. Leadership skills should never be limited to the education provided by an employer. This education alone serves the initial goals and intentions of the employer, but does not sharpen the skills of the leader to the extent needed for a leader to achieve his or her highest potential.
In leadership your ultimate responsibility is to support and encourage your employers goals through utilizing both those tools that have been provided by your employer and the education and experiences influenced by your own efforts and actions. Education and application are close relatives in the exercise of leadership. Neither of these contributing relatives can achieve their highest level of success without the application of the other. When a leader accumulates education with the intention of sharing, the leader opens the door for everyone to experience mutual based opportunities.
John Quincy Adams was once quoted as saying,”If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”. In this quote you will find leadership responsibilities at a level that embraces lessons filled with new ideas and a need to seek creative approaches to learning. While sharing these acquired lessons with your teammates and peers you will encounter one of leaderships greatest reward, the reward of helping others achieve their goals. After all leadership starts with giving, not receiving. While this quote inspires big actions to achieve big results, it can be a favorable goal for a committed leader and a great experience for the leader’s teammates and peers.
How do you intend to exercise the opportunities in leadership? I’d like to know…..

Misguided Values are Not Supportive of an Organizations Growth
An organizations values can be easily contaminated with restrictive thought and growth if its caretakers are not willing to exercise the practices required to avoid encouraging what I call, misguided values. Misguided values are not only contagious, but also poisonous to a healthy, supportive and thriving organization.
In most cases misguided values within an organization are encouraged through its leaders lack of will to change as the organization changes. This action that influences this lack does not to have to be embraced by the organization’s entire leadership team for it to be effective. It only requires the embrace of a few of the organizations most influential leaders for it to develop into a very effective poison.
Misguided values are often supported by fear, control, envy, procrastination and lack of understanding of the true purpose in the organizations reasons and opportunities in growth and change. The most challenging opportunity that any leader can encounter is change.
Change is not always predictable. Therefore many leaders are threatened by their belief in its possibilities of lessening their control and contributions to the organization that they have invested what they believe to be the most important career days of their lives.
In this lack of understanding, along with all of the other weakening supports, these leaders are forgetting five of the most important rules of leadership.
- Rule #1 – No one builds an organization by themselves.
- Rule #2 – The life of the organization exists in its ability to adapt to change and grow in its process.
- Rule #3 – Leaders are not the primary life-blood of the organization, this honor exists in the collaboration of all of its employees.
- Rule #4 – Good leadership does not start at the encounter of change, it is developed throughout the journey of change.
- and Rule #5 – Misguided values, only encourage more misguided values.
In leading through these type of challenges within an organization the best of this organizations leaders realize that change is actually one of a leaders greatest allies. It encourages opportunities that may not have existed within the organization and develops new talents in those employees that embrace its possibilities.
How do you feel about misguided values within an organization? I’d like to know….

Falling On the Sword, Is This Term Appropriately Used?
As a leader you should consistently maintain responsibility for the actions of your team. Even its most noble of efforts, it is not the most pleasant action to stand upon. But it is amongst the most rewarding.
I’ve often heard this action termed as, “Falling on the sword”. In this term you will not only find a harsh description of this leadership action, but an effort to appear to be noble and sacrificial in rankings. It sounds cool and responsible, but is it the most appropriate terminology for this action. It gives off the notion that the action of your team member is so discrediting, useless and thoughtless that only severe action would rectify the failure in results.
While no one, not even the strongest of leaders encourage failure to be the result of their team’s actions. It is important to ask yourself a very important question, “Are you encouraging this extreme terminology due to the measure and repercussions of the failure or is this terminology encouraged through your own emotions of fear and restraint in really wanting to take responsibility for your team’s actions”.
In being honest with yourself, you may find that a mixture of both encouragements exists in this hesitance. It does not mean that you are less of leader because of your hesitation in leaping toward taking full responsibility for your team’s actions. It just means that you are cautious in your selective approach to accepting responsibility for actions that you did not execute yourself. It’s human and it’s normal. Even leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa were at some point hesitant in stepping forward when assuming responsibility for someone else’s actions. In their greatness they utilized this challenge to their advantages and so should you.
Hesitance should never become an impotent restrainer of your life. When this challenge presents itself, it is important to look deep into your most confident beliefs in leadership and the support of your team to find those principles that you cherish most. In these principles you will find the clarity needed to lead yourself and your team through the most challenging of failures. Besides, failure is just another word used to describe opportunity. In opportunity, everybody learns new lessons when you make decisions that strengthen the team instead of weakening its belief in each other and its integrity.
How do you feel about the term and action, “Falling on the sword”? I’d like to know…

Last week I watched a new television show called, The Undercover Boss, on CBS. As a leader that has spent his career encouraging and teaching others to manifest the best in their lives, I am extremely moved by the importance of this show. The show offers an amazing approach and opportunity in awareness for the leaders of today. Larry, the President of Waste Management went undercover within his organization to seek awareness in the daily challenges of his employees. It was an amazing experience for Larry. Though he has always known that his employees are very hard workers, he was impressed to experience the commitment that existed within his company.
He found that his project evolved into a journey that would encourage him to not only make changes in the lives of his employees, but also make changes in his actions as a leader. While on this journey he encountered procedures that were implemented outside of the corporate policies, employees that were doing the job of 3 people, employees that possessed the key attitude traits that inspire great performances to arise even in the most challenging of responsibilities and employees that are so committed to their jobs that even the challenges of their personal lives don’t discourage them from performing at their best.
The effort taken in seeking this type of knowledge, experience and wisdom from the inside of any company is an impressive approach to aspiring a productive workplace that encourages quality relationships amongst its leadership and employees. I believe that this is television at its best. It encourages strong relations and productivity in the workplace. I highly recommend this show for viewing. Even the strongest of leaders will benefit from the lessons of The Undercover Boss.
How do you feel about the efforts of leadership shown on The Undercover Boss? I’d like to know…
New Audio Version of this Article! ==> Being a Quality Driven Leader
The conglomerate of personalities that exist on any team can be a challenge to manage for even the most seasoned and quality driven leaders. But the ability to manage as a quality driven leader has nothing to do with the seasoning of a leader, it has more to do with your commitment to application in being a quality driven leader.
One of the greatest appreciations you will benefit from in becoming a quality driven leader is the benefit of developing your team into what is called a mastermind team. The mastermind team acknowledges and respects the team leader, but also benefits from an understanding, that shared intelligence is in the best interest of the team.
The sharing in intelligence is especially beneficial when you are managing multiple business and life cultures within a given team. In this environment, each team member brings new perspectives and ideas to the team. This team is not without challenge. One of its greatest challenges exists in the leader’s willingness to keep an open mind during the collaboration of ideas when the mastermind team is in action.
As a leader, your greatest tool in managing through this challenge is your ability to listen closely for the needs and ideas of your team members. Not utilizing this tool will definitely be a downfall of your own development and the development of your team.
People are typically very descriptive in illustrating their needs and sharing their thoughts, if they feel as though their ideas are welcomed and respected. You as the leader must remain cognitive of your intent to listen and utilize what you hear to strengthen your team. It is important for you to remember that your team depends upon you as their leader to give them direction. In your attention to listening you will not only increase your knowledge of the tempo and needs of your team, but also learn more about their expectations of you as their leader.
While you as the leader will always have your own ideas of what actions should be taken or how tasks should be performed, it is important for you to encourage your team to share their ideas throughout the performance of any task. This encouragement, you will not regret…

New Audio Version of this Article! ==> Real Courage is Needed in Life
Life has a tendency to introduce expectations that encourage you to forget or not appreciate what you have already accomplished in your life. In its need to process activity through measurement and both new and repetitive action it
introduces those challenges that can often become consuming of not only our talents, but also our courage.
It is important for us to remember that life does not give us courage. Life gives us opportunities to practice the actions needed to accumulate courage. Courage holds no prejudice for those that try to do their best, even in the midst of of their weakest moments. I believe that courage is an open door to the lessons needed to meet life’s expectations. It is through our choice to execute the will to open and enter the doors of courage that we get what we deserve; more courage, a better life and the greatest of opportunities.
Many people find courage in some of the most unfamiliar places. I have personally known people to have found courage within a bottle of alcohol, at the end of tobacco, in the ball of their fists and even in the controlling of others.
These are short sided and short lived engagements of limited levels of courage. This courage is absent when the vices, tools or other people are unavailable for support . The courage that lasts, is what I call Real Courage. It is courage that is earned through quality effort, will, integrity and action. No vice, tool or other person can give you this kind of courage. You are the only person that can engage long lasting and self sustaining Real Courage into your life.
Life may introduce its own expectations, but if you have personally introduced Real Courage into your life, none of its expectations will hold any bearing on your opportunities.
How do you feel about life’s expectations and your execution of Real Courage? I’d like to know…..

New Audio Version of this Article! ==>Everyone Participates in the Games of Life
There are many games that we will encourage within our lives. Amongst these games exists games of chance, games of sport and games of challenge. Each of these particular games hold bearing on the growth and development of our lives. Within these games exists valuable lessons that assist us in understanding who we are and what we deem to be important.
In games of chance we find lessons of opportunity that encourage strategy and planning. Strategy is an extremely important contributor to the success of our lives. In our exercise of strategy we learn to overcome objections and plan for the next stages of our lives. In those next stages of our lives we find even more reason to grow and share with the world who we truly have become.
In the games of sport we develop skills of leadership and teamwork that anchor our development in making wise and productive decisions within our lives. While growing in this area of our lives we often encourage similar actions from those that we interact with throughout our days of development. This is a sharing opportunity that offers growth for not only ourselves, but also our teammates, peers, friends and family members.
In games of challenge there exists lessons that encourage integrity and wisdom to be practiced simultaneously. Challenge has the ability to stretch both the mind and will of those that dare to participate within its activity. In games of challenge we often encounter those emotions that trigger curiosity, impatience and hunger for resolution and understanding. It is not the challenge itself that we cherish most for its offering of growth and development, it is the journey that we travel when meeting the challenge that we find our appreciation its offering.
While each of these games serve inevitable purposes within our lives, neither of them have the power to function within our lives without our approval and contribution. As I have shared, these games hold tremendous value for us within our lives. But we must also remember that our lives are not controlled by the contributions or experiences of these games, these games are only additives of our existence.
In my understanding of games they are exactly what they are meant to be, activities of participation that encourage lesson, sharing and growth through time and commitment. In the games of our lives we do not look for opportunities to quit, nor do we aim for place or show. We are participating because we intend to win.
How do you feel about the games that contribute to your life? I’d like to know….

New Audio Version of this Article! ====> The Road of Visionary Leadership
Visionary leadership can be a very challenging road to travel. The visionary leader is consistently seeking to identify a better way to provide a better opportunity for his workplace. He is smart enough to realize that he is not the smartest mind in the room. In his evaluation of the surrounding practices that exists within his workplace, he realizes that the smartest mind, is the collective mind of the entire team.
Through his ability to see the best in those that struggle through change, growth and development, he brings challenge to his environment. Being a visionary leader is not always a glamorous approach to building a career in the place that he works. Challenge can often create misunderstanding amongst his peers. In this misunderstanding there can exist an interpretation of this visionary leader being arrogant, pushy and disrespectful. It is a false truth. The visionary leader is actually a caring leader that commits himself to bringing the best out of himself, his teammates, his peers and his workplace.
He realizes that challenge stretches the boundaries of the existing status quo. Often the best performers of a workplace become complacent in their development and the development of those that depend upon their ability to share their talents. In this complacency these best performers find comfort in the results of their past successes. Though their past successes may have afforded them their promotion to their present roles and responsibilities, often the newly developed challenges, conditions and expectations of the workplace grow as society grows. The visionary leader understands that it is a leaders responsibility to grow in the same manner.
The expectations of society always enters the boundaries of the workplace. People often find it difficult to leave their life’s personal considerations at the office door. This fact will always challenge the development and approach of any leader, regardless of their leadership styles.
The visionary leader often creates new boundaries through challenge. Not all challenge imposes an intention of demonstrating the weaknesses of his peers. Often his actions of challenge are intended to sharpen and increase awareness within the existing talents of his peers and teammates.
Visionary leaders are brave in their quest for answers as to why things are done, the way that they are done. Even when he hears those repeated words, “I don’t know, this how it has always been done”, he understands the source of this answer and embraces compassion when seeking a new way to meet and teach the needs of todays challenges.
Change is an opportunity for a visionary leader, not a burden. The burden embodied within a visionary leader, exists in his own challenge to remain patient in his delivery of new ideas. He also struggles with accepting that change cannot and will not take place in his workplace, because of the acceptance in the status quo by others.
The visionary leader often walks a fine line within his workplace. It is a line of choice, not a line of force….
How do you feel about visionary leadership? I’d like to know….

“I can because I care”, is what a person who respects himself for loving other people, says when asked about his kind actions or gestures he consistently offers others. Caring extends far beyond the shallow thoughts or restricted actions of hatred. Even in its simplistic approach, caring can offer life long rewards to those that choose to practice it with sincerity, on a consistent basis.
Being simplistic, does not minimize the effect that caring can impose on someone’s life. When you are a caring person you often leave an impact on those people whose lives that interact with your daily actions. Caring actually encourages others to take similar actions because of their experience within your actions of care. Once a person gains a true appreciation of how caring can effect someone’s life, their life is never the same.
Others receive your intentions of care in many different ways. Some will receive it in an appreciative manner, while others may receive it with suspicion. Neither of these manners should deter your willingness to express care to others. Caring will never let you down, it is the lack of appreciation by others that let’s caring down.
Caring offers growth to both you and those that you choose to share this special gift. When you consistently practice caring, you encourage values of character, power, faith, fortune, wisdom, integrity, peace and grace with your life and the life of others.
It is a great opportunity that should be practiced often. Even in its probability of being rejected or unappreciated, caring never lessons in its offering as being a gracious gift.
How do you feel about caring? I’d like to know….
